Regions cleared to reopenin in phase 2 Friday

ALBANY, N.Y. (WBEN/AP) — While the Buffalo and Western New York region will have to wait until at least Tuesday to enter into Phase 2 of reopening from a coronavirus shutdown, five regions across upstate New York are now eligible to begin the next step.

“There was an adjustment upward in terms of how many contact tracers we would need,” Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul told WBEN on Monday. “We though we had the numbers, but (the new adjustment) is based on the infection rate.”

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – The Western New York region was not expected to open on Friday due to its inability to meet the state threshold on hospitalizations and deaths, though the region’s efforts to reopen took a step backwards on Thursday because of the increase in new hospitalizations.

“Those people who develop antibodies… Those are ones who are more likely to get back to work sooner as we figure out how to do broad-based testing,” Hochul said, adding that “tremendous progress” is being made in developing those tests.

“Testing is not widely available in Western New York, you can not just walk in to a hospital and get tested for COVID-19. That is certainly not the case,” said Dr. David Hughes, Chief Medical Officer at Kaleida Health. “In Erie County, there’s very few labs that can do testing.”
