It May Be Lent & Fish Fry Season...

But March 14 Means One Thing: Pi O My!

Ever wonder what famed physicist Larry Shaw has to do with one of our favorite desserts?

Shaw founded Pi Day in 1988, a date to celebrate the mathematical constant pi (π) and to enjoy all kinds of pie. Seems the digits in the date, March 14 or3/14, are the first three digits of π (3.14), the ratio of the circumference of a circle~3.14

That type of math makes my head hurt, so I’d rather focus on the pie. Apparently so do many others as Pi Day continues to grow in popularity. Whether its savory pot pies, pizza pies or sweet pies, a number of businesses have capitalized on the unique 3.14 numbers and creatively marketed their delicious dishes with a discount on March 14th only.

Here are a few local deals:

  • Blaze Pizza, new to the WNY market, is offering fast fired pizza, one per customer, for just $3.14.
  • Boston Market: Get a free chicken pot pie with the purchase of a pot pie and drink.
  • Whole foods: Get $3.14 off any large pie from the bakery.
  • Tops: Offering three coupons (with shoppers card) for an eight inch all varieties pie, self-rising pizza, and white chicken pot pie for $3.14 each.

Or check out this website: www.foodydirect.com is offering an infinite number (get it?) of pie deals from sweet to hearty.

My favorite pies? Pizza with hot peppers, mushrooms and extra sauce, sweet potato and pumpkin pie on the sweet side, and if it’s savory, I’m all in on a Butternut Squash and Pecan Pot Pie.

What’s your pie preference?
