As the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” represents the time many of us will be throwing down the grilling gauntlet and dishing out everything from dogs, burgers, apps and sides to entrees and even sweet treats on the barbie. 

As you’re breaking bread –and buns –during the holiday weekend, nosh on these tasty tidbits, courtesy of Wallet Hub:

  • Some 60% of Americans barbeque each Memorial Day weekend. Independence Day leads the pack at 74%.
  • Hot dogs are eaten every second from Memorial Day to Labor Day, totaling seven billion weinies!
  • Beer sales peak on the 4th of July, with Memorial Day coming in a sudsy second.
  • Sales of meat and seafood on Memorial Day total a whopping $1.5 billion.
  • At 25%, more home-cooking fires happen on Memorial Day than average.
  • President Lyndon B. Johnson was the first to host a BBQ at the White House. The featured menu item was Texas-style barbecued ribs. 

My favorite grilled dishes are turkey burgers, eggplant, corn on the cob and peaches, which caramelize beautifully on the grill and taste delicious over ice cream or with a big dollop of whipped cream for a luscious end-of-meal treat. 

As we indulge and enjoy in our uniquely American style, let’s take time to thank the men and women who have served our country and those who wear the uniform today. I salute them today and every day and never take their sacrifice for granted.
