Orchard Park, N.Y. (WBEN) - Weather permitting, Winterfest at Chestnut Ridge Park on Sunday may include the launch of a new tow rope on the ski hill.

"If we have snow, then we will have not only our sledding hill, but for the first time, skiing will return to Chestnut Ridge Park," said Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. The new tow rope has been completely installed and approved for use by the state.

"Assuming we get a few inches of snow," said Poloncarz, "we may be able to bring free skiing to the park this weekend." Downhill skiing has been absent from the park for approximately 20 years.

Sledding has been a very popular Winter event on the big hill.  Poloncarz doubts the toboggan chutes will be open this weekend since they require a six to eight inch snow base.

Snow or No Snow, there will be activities both inside and outside the park casino Sunday.
