Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - With the first Canalside Concerts of the season set to take place later this week, some people with an eye toward the future are wondering if the space will be able to accommodate the shows after this summer.

With a carousel set to be a permanent fixture in the same space as the stage at Canalside as soon as later this year, what could that mean for the future of Canalside concerts?

"As that neighborhood builds up, it's going to be more and more difficult to do concerts on the scale that we've done them in the past," said Steve Ranalli, President of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, which oversees Canalside. "I think overall the concert series will continue to evolve over the next few years. We've built a beautiful three-and-a-half acre event lawn on the Outer Harbor which we think is a good option for large-scale concerts in the future."

That doesn't necessarily mean though, that this is the last year of concerts at Canalside.

"As long as we have lawn area available, I think that we can still continue to offer concerts at Canalside," Ranalli said. "Once more buildings go up and more things are occurring, we'll look to a future concert series."

The concert series has already underwent a couple of significant changes this year.

No longer will the concerts be primarily held on Thursdays, as has been tradition for decades. Instead, the shows are set to be held on a variety of days both during the workweek and on weekends. There will also not be a set announcement date for the shows, which were announced one-by-one as they were booked.

An open house to discuss what's in store for one of those open parcels of land near the stage, the 'pit' at the North Aud Block, will be held tomorrow evening at the Pavilion at Canalside from 5:30 to 7:30.
