Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The southbound South Grand Island Bridge will be closed this weekend so that work can be done to make the decking safer during inclement weather.

The Southbound I-190 at the South bridge will close at 5am Saturday through 5am Monday.  Workers will be grinding the surface of the bridge to provide a "uniform deck profile and a higher quality, smoother riding surface for motorists," according to the New York State Thruway Authority.

During this scheduled work period, contractors will be using specialized equipment to grind the road surface on the bridge.  During the closure, all southbound traffic on the I-190 will be shifted into a single lane configuration on the northbound South Grand Island Bridge. Overhead lane designation signals will be used to safely direct traffic over the bridge during this construction period.

Crews will work around the clock during the weekend closure on the South Grand Island Bridge, to reduce traffic disruptions.

Work on the South Grand Island Bridge is scheduled to begin Friday, Nov. 16 at 8p.m with alternating lane closures.

All work is weather dependent.

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to consider alternate routes during the scheduled closure. Variable Message Signs (VMS) are illuminated to advise motorists of traffic patterns and potential stoppages.

Motorists are urged to be alert and follow the posted work zone speed limits.

All work on the Southbound South Grand Island Bridge should be complete by 5am Monday morning.
