Okay geeks and video game aficionados, the World Video Game Hall of Fame at the Strong Museum in Rochester has its finalists for the 2017 induction in May.

Did you even know the World Video Game Hall of Fame was just down the 90 in the next town over?  Well, this is only the third year for the Hall of Fame, so, with gaming culture what it is and all, I can understand.

Anyway, the Hall of Fame has narrowed down the list to 12 from among thousands of games nominated.

Prior inductees include Doom, Grand Theft Auto 3, The Legend of Zelda, Pong, Space Invaders.

Here's the list:

  • The original arcade Donkey Kong
  • The original Final Fantasy 7
  • the original Halo, Microsoft Windows Solitaire
  • The original arcade Mortal Kombat
  • Pokemon Red and Green,
  • Portal
  • Resident Evil
  • The original arcade Street Fighter II
  • Tomb Raider
  • Myst
  • WII Sports

The criteria for being an inductee: a game that has achieved icon status, is wide-spread, and has influenced game design or popular culture.  There's no set ratio.

I think there is no question Donkey Kong should go in the Hall of Fame this year.

Also, I think you could argue that technically, Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat bring a lot of the same to the table, but I think there's no question Mortal Kombat is iconic and more influential both in game design, and certainly culturally.
