Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) A UB basketball player has been suspended after police say he assaulted a woman Tuesday night. Quate McKinzie faces additional charges after police say he tried to contact the victim.

City of Tonawanda Police Captain Fred Foels says McKinzie's altercation "began verbally and escalated to a physical incident." McKinzie is accused of choking the woman, and also is charged with assault, menacing, harasssment, and stealing the victim's car.

When he was arraigned Tuesday, a no contact order was issued against McKinzie. Foels says McKinzie contacted the victim by phone from the holding center. "There were calls made out to the victim with regards to what happened. The calls addressed dropping the charges and were threatening in nature," says Foels.

UB issued this statement: "University Athletics is aware of the alleged incident and is in communication with university and local authorities. Quate McKinzie is currently enrolled at the University at Buffalo and is suspended indefinitely from the university’s basketball team. Due to the ongoing investigation and federal protections on student information, we will have no further comment on the matter at this time."

McKinzie is being held without bail.
