Elma, N.Y. (WBEN) - Multiple Erie County Sheriff’s units, including tracking K9s, were dispatched to Elma to search for two boys who did not return to Elma Primary following recess. The boys have been located and are unhurt.

The Sheriff’s Office says the two boys, ages 9 and 10, were found at a nearby residence.

Sheriff's deputies say initial reports are the boys were "turned around" in the woods. Superintendent Douglas Scofield says "the boys are both safe and reunited with their families. The school was in a hold in place so we could take enrollment and make sure there were just two (missing)."

Scofield says an investigation will begin into this incident and how to make sure it does not happen again Tuesday "We do know they went on a back premises. There are some trails through the woods so we know they entered through there. We're not sure what path they took. That will be part of what we're looking at," explains Scofield.

Scofield says protocol is the building office is notified, and then he is informed. "We're grateful to have the school resource officer within our district, because with his cooperation, we were able to have the sheriff's and State Police here in a matter of minutes," says Scofield. He calls this a great example of the school resource officer program.

Scofield says there's no sign of foul play, just a matter of a beautiful day Monday.
