Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A fiery crash on the outbound 33 expressway claimed a life early Thursday morning.  The multi vehicle crash happened around 2:15am near Suffolk Street. Police say both cars burst into flames.

Three people were taken from the scene in ambulances.  One person died.  The eastbound lanes of route 33 were closed from Bailey Avenue to Eggert Rd for more than 5 hours due to the police investigation. Buffalo police say a vehicle was driving the wrong way on the 33 and struck another vehicle causing the two vehicles to start on fire. Police say the vehicle was traveling westbound in an eastbound lane.

Investigators say road crews who were doing work overnight on the 33 immediately attempted to assist the two drivers. As the workers were assisting, two of the workers were struck by a third vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle traveling the wrong way, a female believed to be in her late 20's, was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to ECMC to be treated for apparent non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the third vehicle was initially treated at the scene.

The two workers were also transported to ECMC with apparent non-life threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.

Also in Erie County overnight, a motorcyclist was killed in Marilla.

A passerby discovered the driver of a motorcycle deceased in the road and alerted Erie County Sheriff Deputies about the crash on Parker Rd.   It happened around 2:30am.  The Sheriff's office believes the operator of the motorcycle hit a deer and lost control.
