BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - With the 180th annual Erie County Fair kicking off on Wednesday, thousands of Western New Yorkers will return to the fairgrounds in Hamburg for the annual celebration known as "The Best 12 Days of Summer".

"We like to say that we have one step in the past in the traditions but a couple steps moving forward," Erie County Agricultural Society Marketing Manager Marty Biniasz told WBEN on Tuesday morning. "One of the things we're really proud of is the I-Hub. Fairs have always been the place to see new technologies, whether it was steam tractors in the 1800's or even a display of radio in the 1920's, you come to fairs to see, touch, feel, and experience. We've become more virtual as a society and see more technology on our phones all the time."

The I-Hub, which stands for "innovation, imagination, and ingenuity" was created to highly the growing STEM field. The Erie County Fair's I-Hub will be developed into a standalone 6,000 square feet pavilion.

With the return of fair rides and games as a staple of the fair, Biniasz said it's important to remember the agricultural element of the fair. More than 3,000 animals will be at the fair on any given day ranging from cows, horses, goats, sheep, chickens, and more.

"It used to be where everybody had an aunt or uncle or someone in their family who lived on a farm," Biniasz said. "98 percent of people in America have no connection with agriculture and no connection of where their food is coming from. Fairs are the place where that 98 percent mingle and learn from the 2 percent that is feeding America and Western New York."

The Erie County Fair runs from August 7 to August 18. Tuesday is the last day to purchase $7 pre-sale tickets at area Tops Friendly Markets. Fairgoers can get one complementary ticket into the fairgrounds on Wednesday by bringing two canned goods.
