Trump Said to Pick Another General for Homeland Security

December 07, 2016 - 8:24 am
WASHINGTON (AP) - People close to the president-elect's transition team say Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Gen.John Kelly to run the Department of Homeland Security.

Kelly retired earlier this year as head of the U.S. Southern Command, which included oversight of the Guantanamo Bay detention center. If confirmed by the Senate, Kelly would be the fifth person to lead the department and the first one who isn't a lawyer.

He would be the second retired four-star general nominated by Trump for a Cabinet position, joining James Mattis, Trump's pick for defense secretary.
