TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns announced that the Northtowns Auto Bureau in Tonawanda will begin Saturday service on July 28.

The bureau, which currently operates Monday through Friday, will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will be the only bureau in Erie County to be open six days a week.

"This auto bureau in Erie County will be the only auto bureau that will have two Saturday's that will be open," Kearns said. "We are now in Cheektowaga from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. If you go there, you'll understand why we're doing this. We have a tremendous amount of transactions. We're approaching nearly 1,000 transactions per day."

Kearns also said satellite sites like Erie Community College are swamped with as many as 500 transactions a day, which are more than twice the amount the bureau can handle.

"From 2017 to 2018, our license renewals have jumped nearly 300 percent, from 40,000 up to 134,000 license renewals," Kearns said. "That's a positive for Erie County...This is going to impact many, many people."

The expansion follows the hiring of 11 new civil service employees by the Erie County Legislature in April. Kearns said that the 11 employees began working on Monday and should be ready by the time the bureau begins its Saturday services.

The clerk also said there are plans to expand auto bureau services at the McKinley Mall. Hamburg does not have its own DMV site.
