Thousands awaken to darkness in Amherst, Tonawandas

National Grid restores power before busy morning commute

Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - A large power outage impacted much of the Amherst area and parts of the Tonawandas Wednesday morning.  At the height of the outage, about 20,000 customers were impacted.  Restoration by 5am saw about 15,000 in the dark and by 6am National Grid had restored power to the remaining customers whoe were in the dark near the UB North area.

Amherst Police directed traffic for early morning commuters at major traffic signals that were out and businesses along the busy stretches of Maple Road, Niagara Falls Boulevard and Sheridan Drive were without power.

National Grid worked quickly before the morning commute to assess and correct the issue.
