Suspicious Package in Downtown Buffalo

Crews determined substance was not dangerous to public

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Buffalo Hazmat crews rushed to Main Place Tower Friday afternoon after a report of a suspicious package in one of the office buildings.

Deputy Commissioner Johnathan Eaton says the call came in around 12:30 at the 25th floor of the downtown building. "There was no positive test on the substance, and it's now turned over to the postal inspectors," says Eaton. Eaton says it was mailed in.

Eaton describes the substance as powdery, thought to be talcum powder, but there's no danger to the public.

Eaton would not specify which business received the suspicious envelope, though sources told WBEN that it appeared at the Cellino & Barnes location, which is on the 25th floor of the Main Place Mall.

Eaton says two people had respiratory distress initially, but they were checked out and declined further treatment.

Operations are back to normal on the 25th floor.
