Spectacular tree lighting celebration at Canalside Buffalo

Santa Claus, fireworks steal the show

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - In what's become an annual tradition in downtown Buffalo, thousands of hearty Buffalonians packed the Ice at Canalside for the ceremonial tree lighting festivities.  Santa Claus was on stage as Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown and New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul did the honors in flipping the switch to illuminate the giant Christmas tree that stands tall over the Canalside rink.

A spectacular fireworks show began immediately as the tree was lit and Christmas music boomed from the speakers.

After the tree lighting, Mayor Brown, Lt. Governor Hochul and Santa Claus went to the rink and tried out the all new ice bumper cars.  Mayor Brown and Lt. Governor Hochul could be seen bumping their cars into one another as Santa Claus joined into the action at times.

After leaving the ice and their bumper car experience, Brown, Hochul and Santa talked with WBEN about their Christmas wishes.  At one point during the discussion, Brown quipped he thought he could get more on his Christamas list from the Lieutenant Governor and Governor Cuomo than from Santa Claus.

Throughout the evening, attendees were able to use the rink and meander about the Canalside property to take in the sites and enjoy fare from food trucks on-hand.
