SPCA Closes Tonawanda Location

Move Begins to New West Seneca Facility

Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - It was the end of an era this weekend as the SPCA closed the doors to its Tonawanda location.

"It's emotionally very difficult," said Gina Browning of the SPCA. "On one hand we have this amazing future ahead with this beautiful building that the community gave us. How do you thank a community for backing us up with this beautiful building? On the other hand, I grew up with this building."

The last animals were adopted out of the Ensminger Road location in Tonawanda on Saturday. The SPCA now begins moving to its new location on Harlem Road in West Seneca, which is much larger and provides more amenities than the current facility.

"Right now, we have a wonderful adoption desk, but you're standing at a public desk with an adoption counselor," Browning said. "Other people waiting to adopt are standing next to you listening to the conversation. Now there are private rooms if you're adopting."

Browning said there are also private rooms for those who need to surrender an animal.

The SPCA will still facilitate adoptions at their off-site locations this week, and will be celebrating their official 150th birthday tomorrow.
