BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Thousands of Western New Yorkers will ring in the new year with the annual party in Downtown Buffalo.

But if you are planning to bar crawl in the area, you should be prepared. While some places like Tappo Restaurant are open to the general public, they will have extra security on hand.

"We hope to serve as many guests...as is safe and comfortable," the restaurant said in a statement.

Other bars, like Big Ditch Brewing Company, will not be open to the general public. Instead, they are controlling the crowd size by selling tickets to the New Year's Eve event.

"The first year (we had the bar open) we had it open to the general public downstairs and that was kind of a zoo," owner Matt Kahn said. "There was a lot of people coming in. Now we do a ticketed event which keeps it a little more exclusive and intimate. There's still a lot of people here. It's busy and it's a fun time but it's not overwhelming."

Kahn said the event usually sells out. Tickets include four drink tickets, unlimited food, party favors, and a view of the nearby fireworks at Electric Tower. The 21-and-up-only event also features discounted tickets for designated drivers that gets them unlimited soda and coffee all night.

"At around 11:50 p.m. or 11:55 p.m. we (open our patio spacing) and allow our guests to go outside and watch," Kahn said. "A lot of our guests will take the wrist band and go outside and watch the ball drop in front. You can't see the ball drop from here but you can see the fireworks. Everyone will be counting down and watching fireworks go off. Everybody will be very, very happy."
