Buffalo, NY (WBEN) A settlement has been reached in the hazing death of Nolan Burch, the Canisius High School grad who died in a hazing incident at a West Virginia University fraternity house in 2014.

Burch's family's attorney says five defendants made payouts including the university itself, the fraternity Kappa Sigma, the pledge master, and Burch’s “big brother” Richard Schwartz.

Two days before Burch's death, he and other pledges were blindfolded and brought into a room to meet their mentor, the "big brother." Investigators say when the blindfold was removed, he drank an entire bottle of alcohol, then passed out.

Burch's blood alcohol level was 0.493 at the time of his death, more than six times the legal limit for driving.

The settlement itself is sealed.
