Serious Crash Involving State Police Vehicle

Five people injured when trooper rear-ended civilian vehicle

Fredonia, NY (WBEN) A State Police Vehicle and a passenger vehicle were involved in a crash along the westbound Thruway Monday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 1pm. State Police say 33-year-old Trooper Stephen C. Barker, of SP Buffalo, was responding to a report of a property damage accident.  Trooper Barker was traveling westbound behind a Dodge Caravan being operated by Harry E. Gibbons, 75, of Irving, NY and failed to observe him slowing for traffic ahead and struck the rear of the Dodge.
All westbound lanes were blocked and traffic was diverted at exit 58 Silver Creek, to allow 2 helicopters to land and for accident reconstruction to be completed.
Trooper Barker was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Gibbons and passenger Terrance W. Marsha, 70, of Orchard Park, NY, were also transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  David A. Jordan, 72, of East Aurora, NY, who was a passenger in the van, was transported to Mercy Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Two additional passengers of the van were airlifted from the scene to Erie County Medical Center.  George E. Cole, 66, of Arcade, NY, is currently listed in serious condition.  Timothy W. McCann, 70, of Depew, NY, is in critical condition.
All westbound lanes remained closed for approximately 4 ½ hours while Troop A Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) assisted with the investigation causing significant traffic delays late into the evening.
