Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center ranks among the top 3% of cancer centers nationwide, according to U.S. News & World Report.  The Buffalo-based cancer center moved up three spots, to 30 on the annual list of 50 Best Hospitals for cancer.

"I'm beyond thrilled" said Roswell President and CEO Dr. Candace Johnson.  "It's a testament to all of the wonderful people who put their heart and soul into taking care of cancer patients".

Roswell is ranked 30 out of nearly 900 cancer hospitals around the country. The rankings are based on volume, nurse staffing, and survival outcomes.  Dr. Johnson says they are designed to help patients make informed decisions.

"We have tried to pay attention to quality and giving the very best care that we can to our patients.  If you focus on quality and you focus on outcomes, good things happen to you" said Johnson.

Roswell Park is one of only five New York State centers to make the top 50, and the only New York hospital not located in the New York City area.  It was recognized as high-performing within two subspecialties: colon cancer surgery and lung cancer surgery.  "They look at over 4500 hospitals nationwide for this, so to be distinguished in lung cancer surgery and colon cancer surgery is something that we're extremely proud of."

Dr. Johnson said the ranking is all about Roswell's national reputation, even though they mostly serve patients from Western New York.  "About 90% of our patients come from the eight counties around Buffalo", said Johnson.  "Many come from out of state for clinical trials and innovative therapies. We also get a fair number of patients from Canada".
