Like crocuses in spring, road work has begun to appear across Western New York as the weather warms.

"I think they are trying to get a start on it and get work going as soon as possible, " says Mike Smith, operations manager at the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition.

"I don't know if there are more projects this year (than in other years) .. maybe they aren't as major , but there are a lot of maintenance efforts in a lot of different areas," Smith said

Smith says the two biggest projects this season are the Route 219 bridge work that motorists have already begun to see, along with overnight work expected on the North Grand Island Bridges  out of Niagara Falls beginning next month

The Rt. 219 work includes  the bridges over Smokes Creek and Taylor Road now and will eventually rehabilitate the pavement on Rt 219 from I-90 merge to the north end.  Completion is not expected until late 2018.

Rehabilitation of the Maple Road bridge over Route 290 also begins today  and the nearby intersection of Sweet Home Road and Maple will also see some work in the next few days
