Earlier Story:

BUFFALO (WBEN) - After an emotional Friday evening event known as the Celebration of Hope, the annual Ride for Roswell kicked off Saturday morning and sent a message of hope and awareness as much needed funding is raised for cancer research.

Since the inaugural ride in 1996...the annual Ride for Roswell event has raised over $42 million to support the more than 36,000 patients who turn to Roswell Park for hope each year.

There are 11 routes for The Ride For Roswell ranging from 3 miles to 102 miles. The event covers 14 municipalities, two counties, two countries and over 400 miles.

The Ride's Founder Mitch Flynn shared some cringe-worthy statistics when referencing how all of us are affected by cancer.

"The statistic, which, when I first heard it, I found to be startling, but which is the reality," said Flynn. "One in two men and one in three women will be affected by cancer at some point in their life."

The National Cancer Institute predicts that nearly 2 million Americans will be diagnosed with the sinister disease in 2018, with more than 600,000 people dying from it. However, because of people like Flynn, events like the Ride for Roswell may be making headway in ultimately finding a cure.

"The Ride is an event that is under the umbrella of the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation," Flynn said. "Since its inception in 1991, the foundation has raised more than $300 million for quality of life programs and novel research at Roswell Park."
