EDEN, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County officials want you to take advantage of locally grown produce and to strive to eat healthier.

"A lot of people are always considering where their foods are coming from," Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said. "We'd like to remind people that here in Erie County and the Town of Eden, goes not only in the City of Buffalo and across Erie County, but all of Western New York, New York State, the Eastern Seaboard, and other parts of the country."

The E. Coli outbreak in April left at least five people dead and hundreds more with an illness. The produce grown in Eden was never a culprit in the origin of the illness because it originated in Arizona.

Mattew Agle from Agle Farms ensured the quality of their produce.

"We're very regimented on making sure we put the systems in place to make it as safe as possible," Agle said. "We make sure the water is safe. We make sure the people who are harvesting the produce are handlubg it properly. We make sure that when we do wash it we make sure the quality of the water and the final product is as safe as we can make it."

Poloncarz and Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein also emphasized the importance of eating healthy and demanded that you ask local supermarkets to buy local.
