Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - There's a new push to change the speed limit on the Scajaquada, this time in the opposite direction.

Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra is spearheading a petition to change the speed limit on Route 198 to 55MPH.

"I use that corridor often," Giambra told WBEN. "I've yet to find anybody who thinks that changing the speed limit to 30MPH was an effective mitigation for an unfortunate situation."

The speed limit change from 50MPH to 30MPH was ordered by the Governor back in 2015 following an accident that took the life of three-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy. A driver fell asleep at the wheel, jumped the curb, and struck the child.

Since then though, plans by the state to turn the expressway into a full-blown parkway have stalled, and Giambra says that in the meantime the speed should be changed back.

"I think they may have made it more dangerous than it was before they changed the speed limit to 30," Giambra said. "It's my understanding that last year, the Department of Transportation abandoned any more planning for this particular section of highway because of a lack of consensus within the community."

"I'm not taking a position of what the roadway should look like down the road. Until they make a decision though, bring the speed limit back to 55, and let the public drive."

The petition already has thousands of signatures.
