Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Buffalo is not immune to the rash of statue shaming sweeping the country.  An online petition seeks to rename Columbus Park and get rid of its statue.

The petition is actually four months old now, but has seen some action recently, no doubt thanks to the latest revisionism craze sweeping the country.

Brandon Abscher is the person who started the petition. He told WIVB protesting the statue and the park's name is the right thing to do, and that the statue doesn't belong here.

"Christopher Columbus is not a person we should be honoring. I don't think he's a hero," Abscher told WIVB's Rachele Mongiovi.

In the petition, Abscher argues that Columbus didn't discover America.  Instead, he says Columbus started the "ruthless conquest" and genocide of whole continents.

He also claims Columbus enslaved the Native Americans who were originally here.

Abscher does not suggest what the park should be renamed, he only suggests consulting Native Americans on that.

After the petition achieves 1000 signatures, it'll be delivered to Mayor Byron Brown. They have less than 300 to go.

The petition is HERE.
