ORCHARD PARK (WBEN) - Controversy surfaced this weekend at Orchard Park's graduation ceremony, as the District denied senior Dillon Donovan the ability to walk with his United States Marine Corps sash.

The story went viral, as it was shared more than 2,000 times on social media.

Donovan clarified some of the incident's details via Facebook, saying, "I did receive my diploma, I just was not allowed to walk the stage wearing my USMC sash. It was 100% my choice to not take it off and to leave early after not letting me walk with it on."

The post has since been deleted.

Orchard Park Superintendent Matthew McGarrity posted a letter to the District website explaining the rules and traditions of the ceremony.

"Historically, the District has focused on the graduating class as a cohesive group, wish sashes, cords and individually decorated caps not being a part of the ceremony."

McGarrity also said that, due to the lateness of Donovan's request to wear the sash, the District did not have enough time to amend and rules or further consider the request.
