Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - Town of Tonawanda Police say one man is dead after a car fire on a residential street.

Police say they responded to the area of Wynnwood Ave and Yorkshire Rd on a report of a vehicle on fire at 10:30 Monday night.

Neighbors in the area called 911 after hearing a loud ‘boom’ and later seeing a parked pick-up truck on fire in the street. Linda Wartko lives right across from where the flaming vehicle sat. She soon realized there was someone inside.

"I saw an arm and hand and then the police came and sectioned it all off," Wartko said. "It just continued to burn until they put it out."

Brighton Fire Engine 6 was able to put out the flames. Once inside the truck, police discovered a deceased older white male. The body was transported to the Erie County Medical Examiner’s office. Investigators are working to confirm the identity of the man in order to complete notification of next-of-kin.

Wartko has been a resident of the area for over 30 years and had never seen anything like it. Lt. Thomas Haynes says this is a quiet section.

"It's shocking to see something so unfortunate on a public street like that," Lt. Haynes said.

Lt. Haynes says they did not find any explosives on the vehicle. Foul play is not suspected at this time.

"We do our due diligence which is to send a cause and origin investigators which investigate the fire and detectives that completely investigate the incident," Lt. Haynes said.

The investigation is still ongoing.
