"Token Transit" app to be introduced around April 1st

BUFFALO (WBEN) - The NFTA is in the process of implementing an app called Token Transit that is currently being used by over 50 agencies from around the country.

"What you do, is you download on to your phone, and then you connect with a credit card or debit card. From there, you can move on and purchase single rides, round trip or day passes for the NFTA Metro system," said Tom George of the NFTA. "Once you get that downloaded and you purchase that ticket, then before you either ride the bus or you go downstairs into a rail station, you simply activate that ticket on your phone. You're screen will actually display an animation and some scrolling messaging that indicates to our ticket inspectors, our transit ambassadors and our operators that it's a valid pass, and they'll allow you to use the system at that point."

Currently, employees are being trained on the new system and George estimates a rollout date to be April , and to those who do not possess a smartphone, cash will still be an accepted method of payment.

"Cash will continue to be accepted, both now and in the future, with our new fare collections system," said George. "We'll maintain the ability of our customers to use cash as there are a lot of individuals in the community who need that option."

George said it's a good thing for the NFTA to provide a more modern payment system as society continues to trend toward a more digital age.

"I'm just excited that we're moving into the digital environment and providing an opportunity for our customers," said George. "We're hoping that the ease of the system and the transition we're making will help our customers, and maybe, it will drive some additional ridership because of it."
