New York State Inspection to Include Window Tint

December 06, 2016 - 11:20 pm
Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Window tint in New York State has been illegal for a number of years. After January 1st, if your window is tinted past that set standard you will fail state inspection.

"We do issue a number of tickets for window tint and now with the governor's traffic safety committee they have directed inspection shops to take a look at tinted windows," said, New York State Trooper James O'Callaghan, Troop-A, Public Information Officer.

New York State has one of the  toughest laws against tinted windows in the country.  It states that 70% of light has to pass through. In contrast, Texas, has one of the most lax tint laws only requiring 30 percent of light to pass through the window.

Overly tinted windows are a problem and an added stress for law enforcement as well.

"You never know who's behind that window, O'Callaghan, said. That's always an added danger when you make a 'routine stop' said O'Callaghan.
