Derby, NY (WBEN) - New Era Cap says that they have reached a severance agreement with the union representing workers at its Derby manufacturing facility, and plans to close the plant at the end of March.

In a statement, New Era said an agreement has been reached with the Communication Workers of America on closing the Derby plant that will include severance benefits for employees.

The company called the agreement an important step in transitioning away from operating manufacturing plants. The plant is expected to close at the end of March.

"We are very grateful to all our employees for their years of service," the company said in a statement. "We recognize this is a difficult time for them and New Era is continuing to work with the New York State Department of Labor and several regional companies to help secure employment opportunities for those affected by the Derby closure."

Though they released a statement, a New Era spokesman said the company will not be taking questions on the matter.

Since New Era initially announced the plan for the Derby plant to close, politicians and labor unions have rallied against the company both in Derby and outside their Buffalo headquarters.
