New Era Field Turf Put Up for Sale After County Auction Goes Quietly

Buyer: "It was kind of a no-brainer for me"

Orchard Park, NY (WBEN) - There's new turf at New Era Field in Orchard Park, but it's the old playing surface that's still the subject of some controversy.

The old turf was sold in an online auction by Erie County, something that caught legislator Joe Lorigo by surprise.

"Nobody in the Legislature or even really the general public was notified that the auction was taking place," Lorigo told WBEN. "Whenever we discussed it it was discussed as allowing everybody to get a piece of the action. Instead, one person purchased it for $4,500, and I'm told that the bidding all occurred after the auction had formally closed."

Pat Brady is the person who closed the bidding at $4,551. He says that got him half of the playing surface, the sidelines, and both end zones.

Lorigo said he doesn't hold anything against Brady, who he thinks pulled a smart business move.

Brady told WBEN that making the decision to buy was the easy part.

"It was kind of a no-brainer for me," Brady said. "When I was younger, I was around a lot of sports memorabilia, so it made sense."

"I've been looking for a project like this for quite a while to throw myself at."

Brady is selling 3 foot-by-3 foot sections of the turf, as well as larger portions he said you can use for many different applications. He is planning on developing products that use the turf one the novelty of owning a section wears off.
