BUFFALO (WBEN) - According to report by AAA of Western and Central New York, the national average for a gallon of gas is at $2.44, up just one cent compared to last week, but up 13 cents compared to this time last year.

In New York, the average currently sits at $2.61 per gallon - higher than the national average but down two cents from last week - up 14 cents from last year.

While winter gasoline is typically cheaper than peak season in the summer for several reason, most notably that people are traveling more during the warmer months, this weekend is considered peak winter season with people traveling because of Presidents Day.

"We're still using the winter blend of fuel, which is cheaper to produce," said AAA spokesperson Elizabeth Carey. "These are some of the cheapest prices we're going to see this year."
