Metro Rail Expansion Could Help Rehabilitate DL&W Terminal

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Gov. Cuomo announced during his State of the State regional address in Buffalo Monday he wanted Metro Rail to expand to Amherst. That was music to the ears of one local congressman.

"Moving students from three campuses is fundamentally important, The Metro Rail is an important mode of transportation to accomplish that goal." says Congressman Brian Higgins. "Redeveloping the DL&W Terminal is about time, it's not a question of if but when. We see great space in close proximity to Canalside so DL&W is going to get redeveloped."

HIggins anticipates the NFTA will apply for $43 million in federal funding for the project. "I plan to fight successfully for that money and we will create an environment so the public sector can come in," says Higgins. He says it will likely be a 50-50 match for the Amherst extension between state and federal money. Higgins says there could be private sector money involved as well.

Higgins says the NFTA is trying to figure out the cost of right of way acquisition.

He says the terminal could be redeveloped in two years.
