Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown announced Tuesday morning that a lease agreement has been signed to bring a new AMC Movie Theater downtown.

The new AMC is set to take up space on Main Street vacated by the Market Arcade.

Talks about a downtown theatre at the Market Arcade began in mid-2015 when Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown announced the Benchmark Group was assigned to develop the complex into a fully renovated eight-screen theater. Brown announced a deal has been reached and should be open by next summer. He says there will be an overhaul. "I would assume it will be gutted. It will be state of the art with modern technology. We're excited the movie theater is coming and the deal has been inked," says Brown.

The $9 million investment of the theater was expected to be open by the summer of 2016, but was delayed for a variety of reasons according to Mayor Brown including its acquisition by the Chinese company Dalian Wanda Group.

"It's my understanding that 99 percent of those issues have been addressed," Mayor Brown said in an interview with WBEN earlier this year. "I'm hopeful that in the next month or two we will have an announcement that things have been finalized and the AMC project for the Market Arcade in Buffalo is moving forward."
