Man Killed in Shooting near Amherst Elementary School

Large police presence continues in the area


Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - Shots were fired late last night in the area of Springville Avenue and Cambridge in the Town of Amherst, not far from the UB South campus.  Officers arrived and found a 31 year old man dead at the scene.

Amherst Police are not releasing any information about a suspect, but they say the public is not in danger. The scene is within a block of  Windermere Boulevard Elementary School. Police say there will likely be an increased police presence in the area.

Officers responded around 10:17 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired. They found a man dead on Springville. They said he was a resident of the street, but did not say whether he was found inside or outside his home. His identity was not immediately released.

Amherst Police were assisted by UB Police, Tonawanda Police and the Erie County Sheriff's Air One helicopter.
