Man Dies While in Buffalo Police Custody

Police say man ingested 'bag of white powder' and was taken to the hospital


BUFFALO, NY (WBEN) - Buffalo police are investigating a death that occurred in police custody on Tuesday night. 

Police say the incident happened just after 9:00 Tuesday night at North Oak and Tupper while officers conducted a traffic stop. Police say during the stop, a male driver ingested a bag of white powder believed to be narcotics.

Then, officers then called for an ambulance.

The male, 47, was transported by ambulance to ECMC, and later died at the hospital.

The medical examiner conducted an autopsy on Wednesday morning, though the results have not been released.

Tuesday's incident remains under investigation by Buffalo Police and the officers involved in the incident have not been placed on administrative leave at this time. The Erie County District Attorney's office has been notified and provided with the information.
