Maid Of The Mist Launches Earliest Season Ever

It's No April Fool's Joke

March 27, 2017 - 6:48 am

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - The Maid of the Mist tour boats that bring passengers from the New York shore to the base of the falls in the lower Niagara River will open the 2017 season on Saturday.

"Typically what happens is the ice boom is removed from the mouth of the Niagara River, and we've got to wait until the ice runs through the lower Niagara River," said Maid of the Mist spokesman Kevin Keenan. "This year, with virtually no ice at all, we were able to make the decision to open up this Saturday."

Keenan said you can expect large crowds for opening day.

"Opening Day is a big day because Niagara Falls, regardless of the time of year, is always a tourist destination," Keenan said. "We certainly see a lot of pent-up demand through the course of winter... people want to know when we're opening. A lot of people will plan their travels around opening day, so we expect to see some decent crowds this weekend."

A similar attraction, operated by Hornblower, launches from the Canadian shore the same day, the earliest season opener on record for both tourist attractions.

Last year, 1.6 million people rode the Maid of the Mist boats during the tourist attraction's 131st year.

The season runs through early November.

Beginning April 1 through May 19, tours will operate 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (weekdays) and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (weekends).
