BUFFALO (WBEN) - Expansion at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport has reached new heights.  Literally.

Local officials gathered to celebrate the “Topping Off” of the airport expansion project, which means it has reached its maximum height.

Despite the Buffalo Niagara International Airport being considered one of the best in the country for mid-sized cities, Kathy Hochul says it's great that the NFTA is continuing to find ways to make the experience better, and she added that this expansion project will do just that.

"You can always make improvements, and we haven't had a major improvement here in over 20 years," said Hochul. "This project, supported with over $1.2 million by the State of New York and more to come, is an indication that we have some work to do...but this ceremony gives us a chance to pause and reflect on how just a short time the road, in just a matter of years, and we'll have an opportunity to transform the customer experience."

State Senator Tim Kennedy, who also serves as the chair of the state's Transportation Committee, says this expansion will not only provide the airport with a much needed facelift, it will also serve as a boon for the local economy.

"This is an $80 million investment in our airport that's going to create over 300 jobs, and just as importantly, it's going to act as a continuing anchor on the growth of our community and economic development and job creation all throughout the region," he said..
