ALBANY, N.Y. (AP/WBEN) - Erie County Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy is all but the new state chairman.

Ed Cox, the longtime chairman of the New York state Republican Party, will step down to raise money for President Donald Trump's re-election campaign.

Trump's campaign announced the move Monday. Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale called Cox a "fantastic" state chairman who will help ensure the Republican president has the financial resources necessary to compete in 2020.

Langworthy is now poised to take over as New York GOP chairman when Cox steps down in July.

Langworthy had launched a bid to replace Cox, who some Republicans blamed for the party's recent election losses.

Monday's announcement came after several local party chairmen announced their support for Langworthy's challenge.

Cox, an attorney, has led the state GOP since 2009. He is the son-in-law of former President Richard Nixon.

Cox issued this statement Monday:

"Ensuring President Trump is reelected is the most critical task at hand and I'm honored to take on the important role of helping deliver the resources he needs for a huge victory next year. Serving as Chairman of the NYGOP over the last ten years has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life, and I will continue to actively help elect more Republicans here in New York. I will be fulfilling the remainder of my term, and in the process, work to unify the Party and ensure a smooth transition for Chairman Langworthy."

Congressman Tom Reed congratulated Langworthy with this statement:

"Congratulations to Nick Langworthy, my great friend and the new state chair of New York's Republican Party. With his leadership, enthusiasm, and expertise, we believe there are bright days ahead for the Republican Party in New York State. Chairman Cox laid a solid foundation for our party across the state, and we thank him for his many years of service and dedication."
