BUFFALO (WBEN - Brendan Keany) - Numerous local officials gathered Friday morning at Buffalo's Outer Harbor to announce the opening of the Lakeside Complex - a 20-acre, $5 million development that focuses on biking an pedestrian walkways.

Some of the features:

  • Bike Park
  • Great Lawn
  • Independent Wellness Trail
  • Habitat Restoration Areas
  • Mountain Bike Rentals

"We are transforming the Outer Harbor, the waterfront, and Buffalo right before the eyes of the community," said Mayor Byron Brown.

Congressman Brian Higgins made an appearance, and he discussed his vision for the future of the Buffalo Waterfront.

"We're trying to position Buffalo to become the premiere destination for recreational boating on the Great Lakes," said Higgins. "We think these kinds of projects, once we complete the build out of the Outer harbor and Canalside, will really make Buffalo the talk of the boating community throughout the Great Lakes region."

"This is just another great and exciting project on Buffalo's Outer Harbor - another amenity for people who are getting out there biking and trail network to enjoy this great space along Buffalo's Waterfront," said Justin Booth, who serves as the executive director of GObike Buffalo.

The he talked about the increasing measures taken by city officials to make Buffalo and Western New York a more accessible place for bikers and pedestrians. He says initiatives and investments such as the Lakeside Complex continue to add to that narrative.

"We see city after city after city - if you build it, they will come," he began. "We create more infrastructure that's safe for people to get out there to walk and bike more often to enjoy our outdoors, and if we build that quality of life, it's going to attract people here to stay and more businesses to locate here. This is what people are after; quality of life is the currency of the future, and that's what we're creating here now in Western New York."
