Lackawanna, N.Y. (WBEN) - Eleven Lackawana firefighters stood in front of the Lackawanna Fire Hall on SOuth Park Avenue Wednesday and received the coveted New York State Liberty Medal stemming from their bravery and courage in responding to a devastating apartment building on Ingham Avenue in April.  The medals were presented in recognition of the firefighters' quick response and work to successfully save the lives of seven members of the Soliman family trapped inside.

"These immensely brave heroes rescued my nephew and his mother and saved their lives.  They heard a child and his mother were trapped in the fire so they risked their lives by quickly running together into a second story apartment, still actively engulfed in flames and pitch black smoke, to search and rescue them", said Yaser Soliman while embracing his young niece.

State Senator Tim Kennedy and Lackawanna Mayor Geoff Szymanski awarded the medals and it was also announced that Lackawanna Police and Fire would be in receipt of $100,000 in grant money from the state to purchase much needed equipment.

The fire is being investigated as an arson and recently a reward for information leading to arrests was announced by the Erie County District Attorney's office.
