BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – The mother of two-year-old Xavion Hazzard is now facing manslaughter charges after her boyfriend was charged with the same crime following the child’s death on Tuesday in Buffalo.

Keona Owens, 22, was charged with first degree manslaughter in Buffalo City Court on Friday after she was arrested by Buffalo Police at 6:54 p.m. Thursday.

Hazzard was reportedly shaken and beaten around 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the couple’s home on Weaver Street in Buffalo’s Kaisertown neighborhood. The boy was then taken to Oishei Children’s Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Buffalo Police brought Bashar Hall, 23, into their headquarters for questioning on Tuesday, where he was later arrested that evening.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn said probable cause led to the arrest of Owens on Thursday, but could not divulge details about the arrest or whether Owens had a criminal history.

“This investigation is still going to continue right now,” Flynn said. “The charges right now are manslaughter in the first degree. Those are the charges we have probable cause for at this time. There obviously is a higher charge here of murder. There’s a higher charge of murder under the theory of depraved indifference.”

He said that avenue will be explored for both Owens and Hall.

Medical records and the final autopsy report has not been submitted yet to the Erie County District Attorney’s office.

Two other girls were in the home at the time of the alleged killing. The two girls, a one-year-old and a two-month-old, were taken into protective custody, according to police officials.

Owens will be arraigned on Wednesday while Hall will be in court on Monday. Both were remanded on a $500,000 bail.
