LOS ANGELES (WBEN) - Buffalo legend Jim Kelly is the recipient of this year's Jimmy V Award at the ESPYS.

The award goes to one deserving member of the sports community who has overcome tremendous obstacles through determination and perseverance.

Fellow Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks Dan Marino and John Elway presented the award to Kelly.

As past recipients have shown, the Jimmy V Award winner usually delivers a speech that leaves few dry eyes in the audience, and Kelly was no exception. He began the speech and immediately addressed his son Hunter, who died at the age of 8 in 2005 after a lifelong battle with Krabbe disease.

"I continue to dream about my son Hunter and what he's meant in my life...and will never stop," said a choked up Kelly.

He then went on to thank numerous people including former teammates, friends, family members, his two daughters, Erin and Camryn, and then his wife, Jill.

"And my wife Jill," Kelly began. "You are my heart. You are my soul. You are my everything. I love you, Jill."

Then Kelly addressed the fans, and he delivered his main message for everyone listening.

"Make a difference today for someone who is fighting for their tomorrow," he said. "You don't need to be a Russel Wilson, and Aaron Rodgers, to make a difference out there. Every single person in this room can be a difference maker.

"I urge anybody out there...if you have somebody out there who's suffering, it doesn't have to be cancer, it could be somebody not having a good day, it could your mom, your dad, it could be your grandparents - what you say to them, and the smile you have on your face - that could be the difference in them making it to the next day."
