BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - State Senator Chris Jacobs honored Katie Joyce and Meghan Cavanaugh as “New York State Women of Distinction” on Thursday in Buffalo.

Joyce and Cavanaugh are the founders of the local chapter of “Girls on the Run”, a non-profit which inspires young girls to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

The two women often run together. Seven years ago, the idea came to create a local chapter of the non-profit. Since then, over 11,000 young women have participated in the program.

This year’s group has over 1,400 young women participating from 105 local schools across 25 school districts.

The Women of Distinction program was created in 1998 to “recognize the historic contribution of New York women who exemplify personal excellence, courage, selflessness, integrity, and perseverance, and serve as an example to all New Yorkers.”

An upcoming 5K race is the non-profit’s primary fundraiser of the year and it will take place on June 4. Online registration is open to the public until June 1 and more information is available at www.gotrbuffalo.org
