Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The Buffalo firefighter who suffered third degree burns to his hands fighting a fire in January spoke to reporters for the first time since it happened.

Two months ago, Eric Whitehead was battling a fire on Butler Avenue January 10th when he was hit by debris and became disoriented. "I just relied on my training to stay calm and count on my brothers," says Whitehead.

Whitehead suffered steam burns to his hand. Steam burns can permeate the firefighters coat and causes burns when the skin comes in contact with the coat or even when a firefighter sweats.

He says the toughest part right now is therapy. "I'm usually very active and how long the therapy may take and how slow the progession is is tough on me, but I know I've got to go through the process," notes Whitehead. He says recently he was able to put on his socks and turn door knobs for the first time since the fire.

There's no timetable for a return, but Whitehead admits loved ones are nervous. "Everybeody's on edge as far as me going back to work. They're more worried and more cautious but they'll be ok," says Whitehead.
