Heavy Winds Expected, With Winter Storm Warning in Southtowns, So. Tier.

Snowfall this afternoon, but little Buffalo accumulation expected

Categories:

(WBEN) Heavy winds will be part of the mix that keeps a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Southtowns and the Southern Tier Wednesday, with an additional 5 to 10 inches expected near the Boston Hills, The Chautauqua Ridge and into Wyoming County, the National Weather Service says.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS: While the heaviest snowfalls will avoid Buffalo, the road conditions were enough to prompt Springville Griffith Institute schools to  be the first closing to call in early Wednesday morning. CHECK THE LATEST HERE.

Winds will be an issue in the more rural open areas at times, with gusts forecast to reach as much as 40 miles an hour, forecasters say.  The continued warning-- and a less severe Winter Weather Advisory for the Northtowns and Niagara County -- does feature any real significant snowfall in Buffalo proper or the first ring suburbs.

"General accumulations around the Northtowns and Metro Buffalo of maybe only 2 to 4 inches at the most, and across the higher elevations of the Western Southern Tier, a bit more, maybe looking at 4 to 8 inches," says Tony Ansuini, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service.

Ansuini adds that this time of year, with the higher angle of the sun, there will be enough warming on the roads, that melt will accompany the snowfall and make for few driving difficulties in the city and it's first ring suburbs.
