Roads are snow covered Tuesday morning and are expected to be more so over the coming days.

The National Weather Service has a pair of bulletins calling for heavy snowfall starting this evening and lasting into Thursday.

  • 8-16 inches are expected across Southern Erie County,  Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Wyoming Counties (pink areas on map at top of page) between this evening and when the Winter  Storm Warning expires early Thursday morning
  • 6-10 inches are expected across Northern Erie County,  Niagara, Orleans and Genesee Counties before the Winter Weather Advisory expires early Thursday morning

"We have an inch to two inches of snow out there this morning across the Niagara Frontier. A little bit of Lake Effect coming off Lake Ontario, and this is in advance of that Nor'Easter expected to bring additional snow here through the course of mid-week," says Meteorologist Dave Thomas at the National Weather Service in Buffalo. WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 2 AM EDT THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches are expected.

* WHERE...Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie counties. Greatest snow amounts across the higher terrain.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 2 AM EDT Thursday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel will be very difficult to impossible, including during the morning commute on Wednesday. Tree branches could fall. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Widespread accumulating snow will create dangerous travel conditions.

* WHAT...Snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are expected.

* WHERE...Niagara, Orleans, Northern Erie, and Genesee counties.

* WHEN...From 6 PM this evening to 2 AM EDT Thursday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute on Wednesday. Tree branches could fall. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Periods of snow and blowing snow will result in snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Slow down and use caution while driving.
