Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Bills fans were stunned Sunday night when Anquan Boldin, who joined the team two weeks ago, announced his retirement. He told SiriusXM NFL Radio he had a higher calling after the events in Charlottesville.

Erie County Legislator and Canisius College Political Science Professor Kevin Hardwick says he was surprised for two reasons. "I was surprised he was retired, but I was also surprised by the reason. Certainly it's admirable, even more if he were playing for the Patriots at the time," says Hardwick. He says the events in Charlottesville have stirred emotions for many around the nation. "Someone like Boldin, near the end of his career may think this is the tipping point and I want to do something else that is more important " Hardwick says Boldin is a well known athlete and makes a statement, people will listen to him. With a conversation going on, Boldin has already accomplished something, says Hardwick.

With regard to players protesting the national anthem, Hardwick says he'd prefer everyone stand, but he won't get bent out of shape about that. "I'd be more upset if people came to NFL games with Nazi flags," says Hardwick.
