Buffalo, NY (WBEN) One real estate broker believes the pace of downtown development is great, but isn't so sure work on the Skyway needs to be done right away.

Last month, New York state awarded prizes for the top ideas in the Skyway Design ideas competition. But George Hamberger of Howard Hanna Commercial Real Estate says working on the Skyway shouldn't be a priority. "Personally, it's not at the top of the list," says Hamberger. "I think it's still a challenge of where do you put 40,000 cars a day going to and from the city and not have it be a real drag for people making that commute." Hamberger says he'd love to see something done with it, but for now, it's best to leave well enough alone.

Hamberger says he's pleased with how downtown development has been going. "The pace of what's been developed has been good. I think it should continue at a sensible pace to keep things going," says Hamberger. "I get great feedback from people from out of town that get word on what's going on here."

He does note one concern. "Parking makes me a little nervous," says Hamberger. "Even though some people thing parking's not an issue and will never be an issue, I think parking is something that should be addressed, especially if you're building a new building, perhaps underground parking like in other major cities." Hamberger does note some of the newer developments, including apartments, have enclosed and underground parking.
